We have two seperate age specific outdoor play areas. The 2's and under area which includes a range of sensory based aparatus (such as our water area pictured below). Our mixed area features a similar range of apparatus but is designed to be a little more challenging to meet the needs of our older children.
Children, especially very young children, vary in the
rate and timing of their growth and development - and in their capacity to learn new things in new places.
As a result, our curriculum - which is based on the Ministry of Education Te Whāriki Early Childhood Education Curriculum
recognizes this and builds on current needs, strengths and interests by allowing children choices and encouraging them to take on-going responsibility for their own learning.
One of the Te Whāriki principals we strongly believe in is to provide opportunities for learning irrespective of gender, disability, age, ethnicity, special needs, gifts and talents.
Because development in a child's life depends a great deal on the quality of experiences provided, all children/tamariki will be encouraged to participate. A key to this will be the use of some of the Italian based "Reggio Emilia" approach to learning. This approach engages specialists in areas such as dance, drama, pottery, gymnastics, and music, allowing children/tamariki to enlarge their sphere of experiences under the guidance of experts in their field.
